Tradition of Giving
In 1905, a small group of visionaries petitioned Singapore’s colonial government for a medical school. The then Governor challenged them to raise $71,000. Led by Tan Jiak Kim and coming from all walks of life, our founding donors didn’t just meet the target. They surpassed it, raising $87,000.
The writing was already on the wall. They didn’t just want their school to be good, they wanted it to be great. Every dollar would make a difference.
Since then, the 23-student medical school has grown into a multi-campus, multi-disciplinary University with over 160,000 alumni spread across the world. To this day, NUS continually aims to surpass itself in providing a rich educational experience and a thriving research environment in the service of society.
Help fuel the imagination, openness and courage that has made us Singapore’s global university. Be a part of the excellence. Give to NUS.
Endowing your gift
To perpetuate this tradition of giving, we encourage our supporters to make endowed gifts to the University. When you endow your gift, we commit always to preserve the principal (i.e. your original gift amount). We cannot spend the principal itself, but will use investment returns from the principal to support your gift purpose. An endowed gift is special in that it provides a permanent source of income for the gift purpose.
In the case of expendable gifts, the entire sum can be spent on the gift purpose, and will eventually be exhausted.
Minimum endowment sizes vary according to what you wish to fund. View a chart of minimum gift amounts here.
