A $50,000 gift from Ngee Ann Kongsi has resulted in an emergency fund to help NUS students who need urgent financial support due to unforeseen circumstances.
The Eusoff Hall Ngee Ann Kongsi Student Assistance Fund will be the first university-wide fund designed to tide students over for short periods or while they await other forms of aid from the University’s Student Financial Aid Unit.
Of the expendable gift, $35,000 will be used to establish the Fund. The remainder of the gift will go towards funding the Eusoff Hall Bursary, which is also open to financially needy students across the University.
Ngee Ann Kongsi, a foundation that actively supports educational, cultural and welfare activities in Singapore, has a special concern for students in financial need.
Assoc Prof Tan Tin Wee, the Master of Eusoff Hall, who was himself a bursary recipient when he was an undergraduate, says “The Fund will help needy residents pay for their assisted stay in our Hall.”
He adds: “In addition, those with urgent financial problems can apply as well. We are grateful to Ngee Ann Kongsi for this timely donation as it comes at a period of increased cost of living and will go a long way to help all affected students.”
The gift comes at a special time for Eusoff Hall. This year marks the Hall’s 50th Anniversary. The Hall began life as the first and only hall for women at the University of Malaya at Singapore. It was then known as Eusoff College.
