The region’s first state-of-the-art surgical training centre was officially opened at NUS by President S R Nathan on 23 October 2008. The Khoo Teck Puat Advanced Surgery Training Centre (ASTC) will enable trainee surgeons to gain hands-on experience amidst realistic operating theatre conditions under the guidance of experienced surgeon trainers.
It offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date facilities and equipment that will also enable practicing surgeons to minimize complications in intricate surgical procedures.
The Centre was made possible by a S$7 million gift from the Estate of Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat. It is based at the National University Hospital (NUH), a part of the National University Health System (NUHS).
Acknowledging the generosity of the Estate’s gift to the establishment of the ASTC, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, NUHS Chief Executive and NUS President-designate said, “We are deeply grateful to the trustees of the Estate of Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat for this tremendous gift. The ASTC will transform the way we teach and train surgeons in complex procedures and it marks a milestone in our ability to provide cutting-edge medical education and excellent clinical care.”
Explaining the objective of the gift, the trustee of the Estate, Ms Mavis Khoo said, "My late father believed passionately in medical research, education and healthcare, and how it makes a real difference to the lives of people. With this Centre, we are hopeful of the immense benefits it will bring to surgeons in Singapore and around the world.”
